The Shapefile

Workhorse of the GIS world. Hated by and used by all.

Shapefiles were developed in the early 1990s.  It is the most universal of all files. You can use it in almost any GIS program.

Why is it hated?

lots of files needed
  1. It needs a minimum of 3 separate files to function correctly (.shp, .shx, .dbf). Lose one of these and its useless
  2. Does not store typology
  3. Cannot exceed 2 GB 😦
  4. Can only store points, lines, or polygons. No mixing
